Model-based multi-sensor fusion for reconstructing wall-bounded turbulence

Wall-bounded turbulent flows can be challenging to measure within experiments due the breadth of spatial and temporal scales inherent in such flows. Instrumentation capable obtaining time-resolved data (e.g., hot-wire anemometers) tends restricted spatially localized point measurements; likewise, instrumentation achieving resolved field measurements particle image velocimetry) lack sampling rates needed attain time resolution many In this study, we propose fuse from multi-rate multi-fidelity sensors with predictions a physics-based model reconstruct spatiotemporal evolution wall-bounded flow. A “fast” filter is formulated assimilate high-rate estimates linear derived Navier–Stokes equations. Additionally, “slow” used update reconstruction every new measurement becomes available. By marching through both forward backward time, are able flow greater than either sensing modality alone. We demonstrate approach using direct numerical simulations channel Johns Hopkins Turbulence Database. statistical analysis model-based multi-sensor fusion also conducted.
